Ethnobotany begins at home! No need to travel far or seek out so-called "exotic" cultures; there is a long and rich tradition of gathering wild plants for food right here in New York. Leda Meredith will guide you through the history of wild food gathering in the eastern U.S. and will give you a tour of the edible wild plants that can be found locally on even a simple walk through Prospect Park. From fresh dandelion greens to savory wild garlic to juicy blackberries, there's plenty to eat right within arm's reach! Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

Wild edible plants are hot items at farmers markets and restaurants in New York City. These same plants can be yours for free once you learn how to safely identify, harvest, and prepare them. Learn to be an urban or suburban forager, and treat yourself to ingredients that would otherwise carry a high price tag.
